house of democracy – winner

The House of Democracy is envisioned as a beacon of democracy – A forum for daily dialogue among citizens – the very foundation of a thriving democracy. The municipal administration in the former treasury represents today’s democracy in action. Paulskirche symbolizes the birth of German democratic unity. Placing The House of Democracy in the old city treasury provides the unique opportunity to unite the symbolic birth of democracy with today’s democracy in action and future evolution of society. Sustainability is at the core of this vision. Transforming the existing city treasury is both environmentally responsible and contextually respectful. We envision The House of Democracy as a vibrant and welcoming space that interweaves the history of democracy, its daily functioning, and the development of future policies – a living institution in the heart of the city. A destination that inspires engagement and participation with multiple entrances and a small new extension into Paulspark with a public restaurant, greenery and a cozy pocket park with outdoor seating beneath the trees. The top is redesigned as a sculptural beacon for The House of Democracy, inspired by Frankfurt’s historic city hall roofs. With large, curved openings, it introduces a contemporary interpretation of tradition. Like a curtain being lifted, it reveals the democratic activities within and provides panoramic views to the surrounding city and beautiful daylight. In this way, the former treasury becomes not just a renewed building, but a sustainable inviting beacon of democracy in balance with the past – open, participatory, and future-facing.
